Why Chinese New Year Is Celebrated

Chinese New Year is a time to reflect on and celebrate the divine lessons passed down to us through generations. It's a celebration of values like filial piety, benevolence, tolerance, and more. However, many young people today may misunderstand these teachings, focusing only on the surface-level customs and forgetting the deeper wisdom that they carry.

The key lies in passing down not just the form, but the true inner meaning behind these practices.

Let’s look at the story of human creation, which is closely related to Chinese New Year. Just as we learn from other cultures and religions that humans were created from clay, Chinese folklore tells us the same. Nüwa, the goddess, created humanity on the 7th day of the chinese new year. As a result, Chinese people from certain dialect groups celebrate this day, reminding us that we were created by the divine for a purpose here on Earth.

Before the Cultural Revolution, Chinese culture was deeply intertwined with divinity and nature, rooted in the principles that have shaped a glorious 5,000-year history, including Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. These elements can be seen in the Journey to the West (The Monkey King) and The Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

How we think today is the manifestation of events that happened thousands of years ago, and only then do we understand what we know now. Society is built on the foundation of previous generations, which is why relearning and preserving culture is so important—it reminds us who we are, why we are here, and most importantly, how to be human.

Even if you are not Chinese, there may be aspects of universal principles that we all share. From the story of Nüwa, you might see similarities in your own culture. Feel free to comment below and share your thoughts!
